Question 1

What is Jatropha multifida used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, the latex of Jatropha multifida has traditionally been applied to cuts and minor wounds for its believed antiseptic and coagulant properties. Roots and bark have been used in formulations targeting skin conditions and inflammation. These applications are typically managed by qualified Ayurvedic physicians as part of compound treatments rather than standalone remedies.

Question 2

Is Jatropha multifida toxic?

Accepted Answer

Yes, all parts of the plant contain a milky latex, and the seeds are particularly toxic due to the presence of purgative resins and proteins similar in action to ricin. Ingesting seeds or large quantities of any plant part can cause serious harm. Any medicinal use should be carried out under the supervision of a trained Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

What does Jatropha multifida look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a soft-wooded shrub or small tree growing up to around three metres, with large, deeply divided leaves that resemble an outstretched hand with seven to eleven narrow lobes. Bright coral-red flowers appear in clusters on long stalks throughout much of the year, which is why it is also called the coral plant. The fruit is a small, three-lobed capsule that yellows when ripe.

Question 4

Is Jatropha multifida native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, the species originates from Mexico and Central America but has naturalised across tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka, where it has been cultivated in home gardens and along village edges for many generations. Its long local presence has led to its integration into Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue.

Question 5

Where can I see Jatropha multifida growing in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is common in home gardens, temple grounds, and village hedgerows across both the wet and dry zones of Sri Lanka. It grows in the low country of the Western, Southern, and North Western provinces and can often be spotted on guided botanical or village walks near eco-tourism areas. No specialist botanical garden visit is required to encounter it.

Question 6

What family does Jatropha multifida belong to?

Accepted Answer

Jatropha multifida belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, a large and diverse plant family that includes well-known species such as the rubber tree, poinsettia, and cassava. Many members of this family produce a characteristic latex and contain potent chemical compounds, which underlies both their medicinal potential and their inherent toxicity.

Question 7

How is Jatropha multifida different from Jatropha curcas?

Accepted Answer

Both species belong to the same genus and share the characteristic of producing toxic, oil-rich seeds, but they differ in appearance and primary use. Jatropha curcas has broader, less deeply divided leaves and has attracted global interest as a non-edible biofuel crop. Jatropha multifida is more ornamental, distinguished by its finely lobed leaves and coral-red flower clusters, and has a more specific profile in traditional medicine.
