Question 1

What is Indigofera hirsuta used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, Indigofera hirsuta has been used in folk medicine for skin conditions, inflammatory complaints, and fever management. Different parts of the plant — leaves, roots, and the whole herb — are employed in various preparations. Any medicinal use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does hairy indigo (Indigofera hirsuta) grow?

Accepted Answer

Indigofera hirsuta grows across tropical Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. In Sri Lanka it is common in the dry and intermediate zone lowlands, appearing along roadsides, field margins, and the edges of scrub jungle. It tolerates disturbed soils and is considered a pioneer species.

Question 3

Is Indigofera hirsuta an Ayurvedic plant?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Indigofera hirsuta is officially catalogued as a medicinal plant within Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic system. The country's Department of Ayurveda maintains a formal register of such plants as part of its mandate to preserve and standardise traditional botanical medicine.

Question 4

What does Indigofera hirsuta look like?

Accepted Answer

The plant is densely covered in spreading brownish hairs — the trait its Latin name references. It produces small pink to purplish flowers in elongated racemes and narrow cylindrical seed pods. Plants typically grow to between 30 and 90 cm in height.

Question 5

Are there scientific studies on Indigofera hirsuta?

Accepted Answer

Laboratory-based phytochemical studies have identified alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins in Indigofera hirsuta, and some research suggests antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity. Robust clinical trials in humans remain limited, so traditional claims should not be taken as established medical treatment.

Question 6

Which family does Indigofera hirsuta belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Fabaceae, or legume family — the same large plant family that includes beans, lentils, and acacia species. The genus Indigofera contains several hundred species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Question 7

Can I see Ayurvedic medicinal plants when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many Ayurvedic resorts and wellness centres maintain herb gardens where visitors can see and learn about medicinal plants. Nature reserves such as Sinharaja Forest Reserve also support a high diversity of medicinally significant species, and knowledgeable guides can point them out on guided walks.
