Question 1

What is Eriocaulon setaceum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan ayurvedic practice, Eriocaulon setaceum is traditionally used for its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been applied to conditions involving the eyes, skin disorders, and imbalances associated with excess heat. The plant is listed in Sri Lanka's official ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue.

Question 2

Where does Eriocaulon setaceum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in shallow freshwater habitats including paddy fields, seasonal marshes, tank margins, and slow-moving streams. It is found mainly in the lowland wet zone and the irrigated dry zone plains. It favours nutrient-poor, slightly acidic water and forms small rosettes at the base of shallow water bodies.

Question 3

Is Eriocaulon setaceum the same as a pipewort?

Accepted Answer

Yes, plants in the genus Eriocaulon are commonly called pipeworts or buttonworts, named for their distinctive small, button-like flower heads that rise above the water on slender stalks. Eriocaulon setaceum is one of several species in this genus found across tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka.

Question 4

Is Eriocaulon setaceum endangered or threatened?

Accepted Answer

The species is not currently classified as threatened in Sri Lanka, though it is sensitive to wetland habitat degradation. Herbicide use in paddy agriculture and drainage of seasonal marshes have reduced suitable habitat in parts of the lowland zone. Conservation of freshwater ecosystems is key to protecting this and similar aquatic herbs.

Question 5

What plant family does Eriocaulon setaceum belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Eriocaulaceae, a group of monocotyledonous flowering plants adapted to wetland environments. The family is well represented in tropical Asia and the Americas. Members are typically small, rush-like herbs with clustered, button-shaped flower heads.

Question 6

Can Eriocaulon setaceum be found in Sri Lanka's national parks?

Accepted Answer

The plant is more commonly encountered in agricultural wetland landscapes such as paddy field margins and tank fringes than within formally protected national parks. However, freshwater habitats within and adjacent to reserves such as Horton Plains support a range of wetland specialist flora. Guided botanical walks in rural areas offer the best opportunity to see it in the field.

Question 7

How does Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue differ from Indian pharmacopoeias?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka maintains its own officially recognised ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue through the Department of Ayurveda, reflecting species unique to or particularly abundant on the island. While the foundational texts of ayurveda are shared with India, Sri Lanka's catalogue acknowledges endemic and regionally significant plants that feature prominently in local healing traditions but may be less prominent in Indian pharmacopoeias.
