Question 1

What is Eragrostis zeylanica?

Accepted Answer

Eragrostis zeylanica is a grass species in the family Poaceae, native to Sri Lanka and listed in the island's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants. The species name zeylanica refers to Ceylon, the former name of Sri Lanka, indicating the plant was formally described from local specimens. It typically grows in moist, disturbed habitats such as paddy field edges and roadsides.

Question 2

What is Eragrostis zeylanica used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

The plant is catalogued within Sri Lanka's indigenous ayurvedic medicine system, where grass-family species are sometimes used in preparations addressing inflammatory conditions, fever, and urinary complaints. Specific applications in Sri Lankan practice are primarily preserved in traditional practitioner knowledge and regional ethnobotanical surveys. Formal pharmacological research on this species remains limited.

Question 3

Where does Eragrostis zeylanica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is adapted to lowland and mid-elevation environments and tends to grow in moist, disturbed habitats — including paddy field margins, roadsides, and forest edges — across the wet zone and parts of the intermediate zone. Sri Lanka's varied monsoon-driven microclimates support a wide range of such microhabitats throughout the island.

Question 4

Is Eragrostis zeylanica endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species epithet zeylanica suggests a strong association with Sri Lanka, though the genus Eragrostis is widespread across tropical and subtropical regions globally. Whether this particular species is strictly endemic or simply well-documented from Sri Lankan collections requires verification against current taxonomic records. Its listing in the Sri Lankan ayurvedic catalogue confirms its recognized presence and local significance.

Question 5

What is Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalogue of plant species recognized in the country's traditional medicine system. It covers hundreds of species used in classical formulations, compound medicines, and home remedies, and serves as a reference for practitioners, researchers, and conservation planners. The catalogue is part of broader government efforts to preserve indigenous medical knowledge.

Question 6

How many medicinal plants are documented in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot with exceptionally high plant diversity for its size, including a large number of endemic species. Traditional medicine practitioners work with several hundred plant species, ranging from large trees to small grasses and herbs. Ongoing documentation efforts by institutions including the Department of Ayurveda continue to add detail to the recorded pharmacopoeia.

Question 7

What family does Eragrostis zeylanica belong to?

Accepted Answer

Eragrostis zeylanica belongs to Poaceae, the grass family, which is one of the largest and most ecologically important plant families on Earth. The genus Eragrostis — commonly called lovegrasses — includes several hundred species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions. Most members are slender, tufted grasses with open panicles of small spikelets.
