Question 1

What is Derris canarensis used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Derris canarensis is catalogued as an ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka, where species of the Derris genus have traditionally been associated with root-based preparations used by indigenous healers. The specific applications are documented in ethnobotanical surveys and are typically understood within the broader context of classical ayurvedic formulation. Scientific research into its properties is ongoing.

Question 2

Is Derris canarensis found in Sri Lanka's forests?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Derris canarensis is a woody climbing vine that grows in the tropical forests and scrublands of Sri Lanka, particularly in the wet and intermediate zones of the island. It tends to favour humid, forested environments and is one of many liana species documented in Sri Lanka's rich forest ecosystems.

Question 3

What plant family does Derris canarensis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Derris canarensis belongs to the family Fabaceae, commonly known as the legume or pea family. This is one of the largest plant families in the world and includes many species with documented medicinal, agricultural, and ecological significance. As a legume, it has the potential to fix atmospheric nitrogen through root bacteria.

Question 4

Where can I learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants as a traveller?

Accepted Answer

Spice and herbal gardens in the Matale and Kandy regions frequently offer guided tours covering the island's ayurvedic plant heritage. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy also maintains extensive plant collections with informational labelling. Some ayurvedic wellness centres include forest or garden walks as part of their programmes.

Question 5

How many medicinal plants are documented in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The Department of Ayurveda and academic institutions such as the Institute of Indigenous Medicine maintain catalogues and formularies that document these plants. Derris canarensis is among the species included in botanical surveys of the island's ayurvedic resources.

Question 6

Accepted Answer

Rotenone is a naturally occurring compound found in the roots of several Derris species and is known for its insecticidal and piscicidal properties. The genus Derris is broadly associated with this compound in scientific literature, though the specific rotenone content of Derris canarensis would need to be confirmed through phytochemical analysis of the species itself.
