Question 1

What does Dasamoola mean?

Accepted Answer

Dasamoola is a Sanskrit compound meaning "ten roots" — dasa (ten) and moola (root). It refers to a classical Ayurvedic formulation made from the roots of ten specific medicinal plants, divided into two groups of five known as the Brihat Panchamula and Laghu Panchamula.

Question 2

What are the ten roots in Dasamoola?

Accepted Answer

The ten roots are Bilva, Agnimantha, Shyonaka, Patala, and Gambhari (the larger five), along with Shalaparni, Prishnaparni, Brihati, Kantakari, and Gokshura (the smaller five). Each root contributes distinct therapeutic properties, and together they are used to balance Vata dosha, the Ayurvedic principle associated with movement, the nervous system, and pain.

Question 3

What is Dasamoola Kwatha used for?

Accepted Answer

Dasamoola Kwatha is a water decoction of the ten roots used internally for conditions involving joint pain, lower-back stiffness, sciatica, arthritis, and chronic respiratory complaints. It is also given during post-partum recovery to support the body's return to strength. Dosage and duration should be determined by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 4

Is Dasamoola used in Sri Lankan traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka has its own tradition of indigenous medicine known as Deshiya Chikitsa, which incorporates many classical Ayurvedic formulas including Dasamoola. Several of the ten root species grow natively on the island, and the formulation is used in both government Ayurvedic hospitals and private wellness practice.

Question 5

What is the difference between Dasamoola Kwatha and Dasamoola Taila?

Accepted Answer

Dasamoola Kwatha is a decoction taken internally, while Dasamoola Taila is an oil preparation used externally for therapeutic massage. The oil is typically applied to relieve deep muscle tension, nerve pain, and joint stiffness, and it is a common treatment in Panchakarma programmes.

Question 6

Can Dasamoola be taken without a doctor's prescription?

Accepted Answer

While Dasamoola is a classical formulation with a long history of use, self-prescribing is not recommended. The appropriate preparation, dosage, and duration depend on individual constitution and the specific condition being addressed. Consulting a qualified Ayurvedic physician before beginning any treatment is advisable.

Question 7

Where can I find authentic Dasamoola treatments in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Authentic Dasamoola-based treatments are available at government Ayurvedic hospitals, certified wellness retreats, and specialist Ayurvedic clinics across Sri Lanka. Many upscale wellness properties in the hill country and along the coast offer Panchakarma programmes that include Dasamoola preparations as part of personalised treatment plans.
