Question 1

What is Cyperus kyllingia used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic tradition, Cyperus kyllingia is primarily used to reduce fever, support digestion, act as a mild diuretic, and treat certain skin conditions. The roots and rhizomes are the parts most commonly prepared into decoctions or powders. Its use is typically guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Cyperus kyllingia grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

This sedge grows throughout Sri Lanka in moist, disturbed habitats such as paddy field margins, roadsides, and low-lying grasslands. It is distributed across both the wet zone and the dry zone and is not restricted to any particular elevation or region of the island.

Question 3

Is Cyperus kyllingia a weed or a medicinal plant?

Accepted Answer

Cyperus kyllingia is often dismissed as a common weed because of its small size and tendency to colonise disturbed ground. However, it has a documented place in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia and is recognised by traditional healers for its therapeutic properties, particularly its roots and rhizomes.

Question 4

What plant family does Cyperus kyllingia belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to Cyperaceae, commonly known as the sedge family. Members of this family are characterised by triangular stems and grass-like leaves, and the family includes hundreds of species found in wetland and grassland habitats worldwide.

Question 5

Are there scientific studies on Cyperus kyllingia?

Accepted Answer

Preliminary laboratory research has investigated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties of Cyperus kyllingia extracts, with phytochemical studies identifying flavonoids and terpenoids. However, clinical human trials remain limited, and the plant should not be used as a replacement for professional medical treatment.

Question 6

How is Cyperus kyllingia different from other Cyperus species?

Accepted Answer

Cyperus kyllingia is distinguished mainly by its compact, globe-shaped white flowerheads and relatively small stature compared to larger sedges in the genus. It was historically classified under the separate genus Kyllinga, and taxonomic references may differ depending on the source consulted.

Question 7

Can tourists learn about medicinal plants like Cyperus kyllingia in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya near Kandy is an excellent starting point, with extensive collections of Sri Lankan flora including medicinal species. Some eco-lodges and village-based cultural tours also include guided walks covering traditional plant knowledge and Ayurvedic heritage.
