Question 1

What is Chaetocarpus coriaceus used for in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Chaetocarpus coriaceus is documented in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, reflecting its recognised role in the island's traditional healing systems. Specific applications are recorded within indigenous medical knowledge, though published pharmacological research on this particular species remains limited. Its inclusion in the national catalogue helps preserve that knowledge for future scientific study.

Question 2

Is Chaetocarpus coriaceus endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Chaetocarpus coriaceus is native to Sri Lanka and is associated with the island's moist and intermediate forest zones. The genus Chaetocarpus has a wider distribution across tropical regions, but this species is specifically documented within Sri Lankan botanical records. Its presence is most reliably recorded in undisturbed natural forest areas.

Question 3

What family does Chaetocarpus coriaceus belong to?

Accepted Answer

Chaetocarpus coriaceus is placed in the family Peraceae, which was formerly treated as part of the larger Euphorbiaceae family. Reclassification of this group followed molecular phylogenetic studies that identified Peraceae as a distinct lineage. The genus name refers to the hairy or bristly surface of the plant's fruits.

Question 4

Where can I find Chaetocarpus coriaceus in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in natural forest habitats, particularly in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. It is not commonly cultivated and is more likely to be encountered in remnant forest patches, biodiversity reserves, or documented in herbarium collections at institutions such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya. Field botanists and ayurvedic practitioners sourcing wild material are among those most familiar with its location.

Question 5

How does Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue work?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalogue of medicinal plants used in the island's traditional health systems. This document serves regulatory, conservation, and research purposes, providing a standardised reference for practitioners, policymakers, and scientists. Plants are catalogued with unique reference codes, and Chaetocarpus coriaceus carries the designation LK94006519 within this system.

Question 6

What is the meaning of the name Chaetocarpus coriaceus?

Accepted Answer

The genus name Chaetocarpus combines Greek roots meaning 'hairy' and 'fruit', describing the bristly surface texture of the plant's fruits. The species epithet coriaceus is Latin for 'leathery', referring to the distinctively tough texture of the plant's leaves. Together, the name gives a concise botanical description of the plant's most identifiable physical features.

Question 7

Are there tours in Sri Lanka focused on medicinal plants and ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Sri Lanka has a well-established ayurvedic tourism sector that includes visits to herbal gardens, spice plantations, and traditional wellness centres. Some experiences offer guided introductions to medicinal plant identification led by local practitioners. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya and various village-based programmes near nature reserves provide accessible entry points for visitors with an interest in the island's botanical heritage.
