Question 1

What is Celtis timorensis used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's ayurvedic tradition, various parts of Celtis timorensis — including the bark, leaves, and roots — have been used in preparations associated with skin conditions, fever, and wound healing. The plant is valued for its reported astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. Formal clinical research on the species remains limited, and its use should be guided by qualified ayurvedic practitioners.

Question 2

Where does Celtis timorensis grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is found primarily in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climatic zones, growing along river margins, secondary forest edges, and disturbed lowland habitats. It is not restricted to protected areas and can occur in modified landscapes as well as remnant natural forest patches.

Question 3

What family does Celtis timorensis belong to?

Accepted Answer

Celtis timorensis belongs to the family Cannabaceae, under the order Rosales. It was previously classified under the older family Ulmaceae before molecular studies prompted a reclassification. The genus Celtis contains around 60–70 species distributed across tropical and warm-temperate regions worldwide.

Question 4

Is Celtis timorensis the same as a hackberry tree?

Accepted Answer

Yes, members of the Celtis genus are commonly called hackberries or nettle trees. Celtis timorensis is sometimes referred to as the Timor hackberry, reflecting both its genus and the geographic range suggested by its species name. Several hackberry species are known for their small edible drupes and ecological value as bird-attracting trees.

Question 5

How does Sri Lanka catalogue its ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda, under the Ministry of Health, maintains official records and pharmacopoeial standards for recognised medicinal plants. The Institute of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Colombo also supports research and documentation. Traditional knowledge is further preserved through classical Sinhala medical texts and the practice of registered ayurvedic physicians.

Question 6

Can tourists learn about medicinal plants like Celtis timorensis in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several rural and village-based tourism experiences in Sri Lanka include guided walks through medicinal plant gardens or community forests. These tours provide hands-on engagement with the country's botanical heritage and are offered in regions with strong ayurvedic traditions, including the Kandy area and parts of the Southern Province.

Question 7

Is Celtis timorensis an endangered species?

Accepted Answer

Celtis timorensis is not currently considered a threatened species in Sri Lanka, partly because it tolerates secondary and disturbed habitats better than many specialist forest plants. However, ongoing loss of lowland forest in the dry and intermediate zones poses an indirect risk to the ecological communities in which it occurs.
