Question 1

What is Carissa spinarum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurveda, Carissa spinarum is used primarily for its root and bark, which are prepared as decoctions to address fever, pain, and digestive complaints. Leaves may be applied topically for skin conditions, and the fruit is sometimes used as a mild digestive aid. Its use is grounded in classical Ayurvedic texts and long-standing folk practice across the island.

Question 2

Where does Carissa spinarum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most commonly found in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, including the North Central, Eastern, and North Western provinces. It tolerates poor and rocky soils and often grows along roadsides, scrub forest edges, and agricultural margins. It is also cultivated in home gardens as a medicinal plant and natural hedge.

Question 3

Is the fruit of Carissa spinarum edible?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the small berries are edible and turn deep red to black when ripe. They have a mildly sweet-tart taste and are sometimes eaten fresh or incorporated into local food preparations. In some folk traditions the fruit is associated with supporting iron levels, though this use is not clinically validated.

Question 4

What are the active compounds found in Carissa spinarum?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified compounds including carissone, ursolic acid, and various flavonoids in different parts of the plant. These compounds are associated with antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in laboratory settings. Clinical research in humans remains limited, so the plant's medicinal applications continue to rely largely on traditional knowledge.

Question 5

Is Carissa spinarum the same as karanda or Carissa carandas?

Accepted Answer

No, they are related but distinct species within the same genus. Carissa carandas (karanda) is more widely cultivated for its fruit across South Asia and is used in pickles and preserves. Carissa spinarum has its own distinct Ayurvedic profile, and preparations for one species should not be assumed equivalent to those for the other.

Question 6

How is Carissa spinarum identified in the field?

Accepted Answer

Look for a dense, multi-branched shrub with paired forked spines, oval glossy leaves, and small white fragrant flowers. Ripe fruits are deep red to black, small, and fleshy. The plant is common in dry-zone scrub and forest edges throughout Sri Lanka.

Question 7

Is Carissa spinarum an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is not currently considered threatened in Sri Lanka. Its adaptability to disturbed habitats and use as a hedgerow plant support stable wild populations. Responsible and sustainable harvesting of roots and bark from wild plants is nonetheless encouraged to protect local populations over time.
