Question 1

What is Carallia brachiata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, the bark and other parts of Carallia brachiata have traditionally been used for their astringent properties, associated with treatments for skin conditions and inflammation. The bark is notably high in tannins, which supports its historical use as an astringent. Specific applications should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner rather than self-administered.

Question 2

Where can Carallia brachiata be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows naturally in Sri Lanka's wet zone and intermediate zone forests, particularly along stream banks and in lowland secondary forests. It is also cultivated in home gardens across the island's wetter regions for its timber, fruit, and medicinal properties. Protected wet-zone forests and riverine areas in the Southern and Western provinces are among the settings where it can be encountered.

Question 3

Is Carallia brachiata endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Carallia brachiata is not endemic to Sri Lanka. It has a broad pan-tropical distribution spanning India, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Pacific. In Sri Lanka, it is recognised and catalogued as a native species with traditional medicinal significance, but it also occurs widely across tropical Asia.

Question 4

What family does Carallia brachiata belong to?

Accepted Answer

Carallia brachiata belongs to the family Rhizophoraceae, the same botanical family as mangrove trees. Unlike most of its relatives, which grow in coastal tidal zones, Carallia brachiata is an inland forest tree that thrives in moist lowland and riverine habitats.

Question 5

What does Carallia brachiata look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a medium to large evergreen tree with simple, opposite, leathery leaves and grey-brown rough bark. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, followed by small, fleshy, berry-like fruits that attract birds. The wood is reddish-brown and moderately hard.

Question 6

Can the fruits of Carallia brachiata be eaten?

Accepted Answer

The small berry-like fruits of Carallia brachiata are edible and have been consumed by local communities, though they are not a commercially significant food source. Birds are the primary consumers of the fruit and play an important role in dispersing the seeds naturally.

Question 7

How is Carallia brachiata used as a timber tree?

Accepted Answer

The timber is moderately hard and reddish-brown, traditionally used in rural construction, for agricultural implements, and as fuel wood. Its relatively fast growth makes it suitable for agroforestry systems in Sri Lanka's wet zone, where farmers can harvest bark, fruit, and timber from the same tree over time.
