Question 1

What is an Ayurvedic diet and how does it work?

Accepted Answer

An Ayurvedic diet is a personalised approach to eating based on your dominant dosha — Vata, Pitta, or Kapha — which reflects your physical and psychological constitution. The system recommends specific foods, meal timings, and preparation methods that support your unique digestive strength. Rather than counting calories, it focuses on food quality, taste balance, and compatibility of ingredients.

Question 2

What foods are allowed on an Ayurvedic diet?

Accepted Answer

Most whole grains, cooked vegetables, legumes (especially mung dal), ghee, fresh dairy, and warming spices such as turmeric, ginger, cumin, and coriander are widely recommended. The precise list depends on your dosha — Vata types favour warm and oily foods, Pitta types lean toward cooling and bitter options, and Kapha types benefit from light and pungent foods.

Question 3

Is Sri Lankan food Ayurvedic?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Sri Lankan cooking naturally incorporates many Ayurvedic principles. The heavy use of medicinal spices such as turmeric, black pepper, and cumin, combined with coconut-based preparations and bitter greens, reflects dietary wisdom aligned with Ayurvedic teaching. A standard rice and curry lunch, with its variety of side dishes covering multiple tastes, is particularly close to Ayurvedic meal composition.

Question 4

Can I follow an Ayurvedic diet without seeing a practitioner?

Accepted Answer

General Ayurvedic principles — eating freshly cooked food, avoiding incompatible combinations, favouring warm drinks, and making the midday meal the largest — can be adopted by anyone without a formal consultation. For therapeutic dietary programmes intended to address specific health concerns, however, guidance from a qualified Ayurvedic physician is strongly recommended to ensure the recommendations match your constitution.

Question 5

What is viruddha ahara in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Viruddha ahara refers to incompatible food combinations that Ayurveda considers harmful to digestion and long-term health. Classical examples include mixing fish with dairy, eating fruit with cooked grains in the same meal, or combining sour foods with milk. These combinations are thought to produce ama (undigested toxic residue) that accumulates in tissues over time.

Question 6

Are Ayurvedic diet resorts available in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has a well-established network of Ayurvedic resorts, particularly along the south-west coast. Reputable retreats provide physician consultations, personalised dietary programmes, and meals prepared according to your prescribed dosha balance for the duration of your stay. Several of these resorts are located between Colombo and Galle, making airport transfers straightforward.

Question 7

Is an Ayurvedic diet vegetarian?

Accepted Answer

Ayurveda does not mandate vegetarianism, though classical texts favour plant-based foods for most people. Certain meats — particularly chicken, goat, and fish — are permitted and even prescribed for specific conditions or constitutions, especially for Vata types who may need additional grounding and protein. Pork and beef are generally avoided in Ayurvedic protocols.

Question 8

What herbal teas are recommended in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Warm water infused with ginger, coriander seed, fennel, or tulsi (holy basil) is commonly recommended to support digestion throughout the day. Specific blends are prescribed based on dosha — cooling teas with coriander and fennel suit Pitta, warming ginger-based teas benefit Vata and Kapha. Sri Lanka produces several commercially available Ayurvedic herbal teas made from locally grown medicinal plants.
