Question 1

What is Artabotrys hexapetalus used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic practice, different parts of the plant — including roots, bark, and flowers — have traditionally been used to address fever, skin conditions, and inflammation. Preparations are typically made as decoctions or powders. Any therapeutic use should be supervised by a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

Question 2

Is Artabotrys hexapetalus native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is native to tropical Asia more broadly, including South and Southeast Asia, and grows naturally and in cultivation in Sri Lanka. It is particularly found in lowland wet and intermediate zone gardens and secondary forest edges.

Question 3

What does Artabotrys hexapetalus smell like?

Accepted Answer

The flowers produce an intense, sweet fragrance often compared to ylang-ylang or ripe banana. This is due to aromatic compounds including linalool and geraniol in the flower's essential oil, which also make the plant of interest to the perfumery and wellness industries.

Question 4

What family does Artabotrys hexapetalus belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the Annonaceae family, a group of tropical flowering plants that also includes ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) and soursop (Annona muricata). Members of this family are frequently aromatic and several have documented medicinal uses.

Question 5

How is the Sri Lankan Ayurvedic plant catalogue organised?

Accepted Answer

The Department of Ayurveda under Sri Lanka's Ministry of Health maintains a formal catalogue of medicinal plants, each assigned a unique reference code for standardisation. Artabotrys hexapetalus is recorded under the code LK94006930, helping practitioners and manufacturers identify the species accurately across regions.

Question 6

Can I see Artabotrys hexapetalus plants when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The plant is found in home gardens, temple grounds, and botanical gardens across Sri Lanka's lowland wet and intermediate zones. Botanical gardens with labelled collections offer the most reliable opportunity to identify the species, while secondary forest edges in the wet zone may also host wild specimens.

Question 7

Is Artabotrys hexapetalus the same as ylang-ylang?

Accepted Answer

No, they are distinct species within the same family. True ylang-ylang is Cananga odorata, a taller tree widely cultivated in tropical Asia and the Pacific for its essential oil. Artabotrys hexapetalus is a climbing shrub with a similar fragrance profile but different growth habit, plant parts, and traditional applications.
