Question 1

What is Adenosma camphoratum used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Adenosma camphoratum is used in Sri Lankan and broader Asian Ayurvedic traditions for its aromatic, carminative, and antimicrobial properties. Practitioners have traditionally applied it in remedies for respiratory complaints, digestive discomfort, and skin conditions. Its camphor-like volatile compounds are thought to be the primary source of its medicinal activity.

Question 2

Where does Adenosma camphoratum grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The herb favours moist, disturbed habitats such as paddy field edges, roadsides, and stream banks, particularly in Sri Lanka's wet zone and transitional rainfall areas. It is typically gathered from wild stands rather than cultivated. It grows as a small annual herb, usually between 20 and 50 centimetres tall.

Question 3

Is Adenosma camphoratum the same as a camphor plant?

Accepted Answer

No. Adenosma camphoratum is not the same as the camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora), which is the commercial source of camphor. The name 'camphoratum' refers only to the camphor-like scent released by Adenosma's leaves and stems. The two plants belong to entirely different botanical families.

Question 4

Is Adenosma camphoratum listed in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant catalog?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalog of medicinal plants recognised for use in traditional medicine, and Adenosma camphoratum holds a catalogued position within it. This recognition supports its use by qualified Ayurvedic practitioners operating under the country's regulatory framework.

Question 5

What family does Adenosma camphoratum belong to?

Accepted Answer

Adenosma camphoratum belongs to the family Plantaginaceae under current botanical classification, though it was historically placed in the Scrophulariaceae. It is a small flowering herb with tubular violet to blue-purple flowers and opposite, finely toothed leaves.

Question 6

Is Adenosma camphoratum safe to use without consulting a doctor?

Accepted Answer

Traditional medicinal plants, including Adenosma camphoratum, should not be self-administered without guidance from a qualified Ayurvedic physician or healthcare professional. While the plant has a long history of traditional use, clinical safety data is limited, and interactions with other medications are possible.

Question 7

Where can travellers learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plant traditions?

Accepted Answer

Botanical gardens, Ayurvedic wellness centres, and guided rural village experiences across Sri Lanka offer insight into the island's traditional medicinal plant heritage. The Sinharaja Forest Reserve and other protected forest areas also preserve many of the wild species that form part of this tradition. Some Ayurvedic resorts allow guests to walk medicinal herb gardens with knowledgeable guides.
