Kulu Safaris is a pioneering tented safari camp on Sithulpawwa Road at Kochchipathana, near Kataragama, run on a nature-first, sustainable footing. It sits close to the quieter Katagamuwa entrance of Yala National Park, and every part of the stay is led by the camp’s own experienced naturalists.
Six elevated, air-conditioned classic canvas tents stand on wooden decks, each with framed doors, a spacious interior and a large en-suite bathroom with hot water. There are double, triple and family tents (a double bed plus two singles), sleeping up to 20 guests in all. The whole camp can be booked exclusively.
Game drives into Yala’s Blocks 1 and 5 are made in the camp’s own fleet of specially equipped Land Cruisers, carrying self-recovery gear and guided by expert naturalists. An exclusive vehicle can be arranged for up to five guests at a supplement, subject to availability and outside the peak weeks of mid-December to mid-January.
Stays are full board, with all meals and drinks included. Dinners move between the camp’s dining spots – bush dinners under the stars and meals in the treetops – with authentic Sri Lankan food cooked from fresh, local ingredients.
Guided birdwatching walks, kayaking on the lake and hillside nature walks are included. The forest monastery of Sithulpawwa and the Kataragama temple complex are close by. Check-in is at 1 pm and check-out at 11 am; supplements apply for children sharing a tent with their parents. There is no driver accommodation on site, but the team can arrange a room nearby.
