Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most visited wildlife reserve and its second-largest, covering roughly 979 square kilometres of dry-zone coastland in the south-east of the island. The park's terrain ranges from thorny scrubland and brackish lagoons to granite outcroppings, open grassland, and coastal sand dunes — a variety of habitats that supports an exceptional density of wildlife in a relatively compact area. It has been a protected reserve since 1900 and became a national park on 1 March 1938.
The leopard is Yala's signature animal, and with good reason. The park is widely regarded as holding one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, and the subspecies here — the Sri Lankan leopard — is found nowhere else on earth. Sightings happen in a range of settings: on the flat granite boulders where they rest in the heat of the day, crossing open dry grassland, and crouched at the edge of waterholes in the early morning. January through July is the period most associated with frequent leopard sightings, as lower water levels draw animals to predictable spots. Beyond leopards, the park is home to Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, wild water buffalo, sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and jackals. The bird list runs to over 200 species — resident and migratory — including peacocks, painted storks, flamingos, pelicans, spoonbills, black-necked storks, herons, and darters.
This is a private safari, meaning the jeep carries only your group and no other travellers. The open-roofed 4x4 — a Toyota or Mitsubishi accommodating up to six passengers — gives clear sightlines in every direction. Your driver also works as your wildlife tracker, reading tracks, listening for alarm calls, and positioning the vehicle for the best view. The safari runs on designated tracks inside the park; all movement within Yala must be by vehicle, which keeps wildlife undisturbed and passengers safe.
Three separate entrance points serve the park: the main Palatupana gate, the Katagamuwa entrance on the Kataragama–Situlpawwa Road, and the Galge entrance on the Kataragama Road. The Palatupana gate is also the designated meeting point for this safari, and free pickup and drop-off is offered from any accommodation within a 5 km radius of that gate. The park closes for an annual period of roughly six weeks from approximately 1 September to mid-October, so visitors should plan dates around this closure.
When booking, you choose between a ticket-inclusive option and a jeep-only option if you prefer to arrange park entrance separately and pay at the gate in cash. Water is provided for each person in the vehicle. Food, drinks beyond the included water, and gratuities for your driver-tracker are not part of the booking. Children from the age of five may join the safari. Early morning and late afternoon departures are available, both timed to coincide with the periods when animals are most active in the open.
