Kumbukgahawatta Hotel is a small, quiet guest house in Wadduwa on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, with a handful of air-conditioned cottages set in their own gardens. It is a simple, homely place to stay rather than a resort, with a restaurant serving Sri Lankan food and a short walk to the town's railway station and beach.
The hotel stands on Mahavihara Road at Molligoda in Wadduwa, a residential part of town close to Wadduwa Railway Station on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle, and a few minutes from the Wadduwa Maha Viharaya temple that gives the road its name. The beach is roughly an 18-minute walk away, and Colombo is about 35 km to the north along the coast.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 75 km from the hotel by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the coast usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the hotel in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Kumbukgahawatta Hotel.
Guests stay in air-conditioned cottages, each with a private bathroom with a shower and toiletries, and its own small garden. Parking is free, Wi-Fi is available free of charge in the public areas, and laundry service can be arranged.
The hotel's restaurant serves Sri Lankan dishes, with Chinese and Western options also available. For more choice, the shops and eating places of Wadduwa town and the restaurants of the larger beach hotels along the coast are a short tuk-tuk ride away.
Wadduwa is a quiet beach town, so most days here are spent on the sand or exploring the coast. The railway station nearby makes it easy to travel up the coast to Colombo or south towards Kalutara, and further south are the turtle hatcheries of the south-west coast, the historic city of Galle with its fort, and Mirissa, the base for whale-watching trips in season. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the hotel.
This is in a tranquil location. Accommodation is spacious and tasteful and the food was excellent. It had outside ensuite bathrooms which took a little getting used to. Highly recommend for a relaxing break.
