Saffron & Blue is a private four-bedroom villa in Kosgoda, on Sri Lanka's south-west coast, rented as a whole house with its own staff and chef. Designed by the Sri Lankan architect Channa Daswatte, it blends tropical modernism with a collection of fine art, large open living spaces and a long pool through the garden. It was formerly sold as Saffron & Blue by Jetwing.
The villa stands at 63 Sri Gnanawimala Mawatha in Kosgoda, a short walk from the quiet Kosgoda beach. Kosgoda railway station is about 0.5 km away on the coastal line, Induruwa lies about 4.5 km to the north and Ahungalla about 3.3 km to the south, with Bentota a little further up the coast.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 120 km from the villa by road, and the drive usually takes around two hours on the airport and Southern expressways, depending on traffic around Colombo. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the villa in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. There are four suites, each decorated in its own colour scheme and each with an en-suite bathroom with a rain shower. Some have mezzanine areas, and two of the suites have outdoor spa baths. The bedrooms look out over the pool or the gardens, and ceiling fans keep the air moving.
Food is taken seriously here: the in-house chef cooks for you, with Sri Lankan, Asian and Western dishes and meals planned around special dietary needs. You choose the time and the setting, whether in the dining room, which seats 12, by the pool, in the garden or on the beach, which makes the villa a good fit for family gatherings and small celebrations.
Kosgoda is known for its sea turtle hatcheries and conservation projects, and the nearest is only a few minutes from the villa. The Kosgoda lagoon is good for birdwatching and boat rides, the Madu River with its mangrove islands is a short drive south, and the water sports of Bentota and Beruwala are easy to reach up the coast. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours from the villa.
We spent two nights here with extended family. The staff were incredible and so attentive! Every meal we had at the villa was delicious (we requested Sri Lankan cuisine).
