Norwood Bungalow

Hatton, Sri Lanka

Norwood Bungalow is the most central of the five planters' bungalows of Ceylon Tea Trails, the Relais & Châteaux tea resort of Resplendent Ceylon. Set in the heart of a working tea estate, with panoramic views of the mountains and of tea pickers at work, it has the most open feel of the bungalows and the largest public rooms.

Where is Norwood Bungalow located?

Norwood sits among the valleys of the Bogawantalawa tea country south of Hatton, with mountain views across the valley. Lying between the other bungalows, it is the resort's "mother ship", and guests drive straight to it rather than arriving through Summerville.

How do I get from Colombo Airport to Norwood Bungalow?

Resplendent Ceylon gives the drive from Colombo airport to Tea Trails as about 160 km and four and a half hours; Kandy is about two and a half hours away. The train to Hatton is a scenic alternative. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Norwood Bungalow.

What are the rooms like?

Norwood has six rooms:

  • Hazel Master Suite – 62 square metres, with a king-size bed, a separate living room, a bath and walk-in rain shower, and views of a private garden and the tea fields.
  • Irvine, Andrews and Trevaldwyn Garden Suites – 39 to 46 square metres, each with a king-size bed, a bath and walk-in rain shower and a view of its private garden.
  • Wyatt Luxury Room – 30 square metres with a king-size bed and garden views.
  • Jeffery Luxury Room – 31 square metres with twin beds and garden views.

Butler service, Wi-Fi and laundry are included. There is no air-conditioning, as nights in the hills are cool. The resort recommends Norwood for guests with limited mobility.

What is the bungalow like?

The swimming pool is backed by two towering stands of bamboo that have grown here for more than 80 years, and the jacuzzi looks out over the tea plantation and a small estate road busy with tuk-tuks and tea pickers carrying their hooped baskets. Inside, a veranda surveys the garden, the dining room is the biggest of any bungalow, with a long table and a gilded gramophone among old sepia photographs of tea pickers and planters' clubs, and a cosy sitting room has a fireplace and ruby-red sofas.

What is included and what can I do?

Stays at every Tea Trails bungalow are fully inclusive: meals, afternoon cream tea, wines and spirits, laundry and the "Tea Experience" tour of the tea fields and factory with the Tea Planter in Residence. Guests can dine at the other bungalows, walk or cycle the estate trails, and make day trips to Adam's Peak and Horton Plains National Park. A minimum stay of two nights applies. For the other four bungalows see Ceylon Tea Trails.
