There are 20 guestrooms. Most have been refurbished with air-conditioning, a minibar and an attached bathroom with hot and cold water, along with private balconies looking out over the Indian Ocean. Four large Colonial rooms in the old mansion part of the hotel have been left untouched.
The house keeps the feel of a bygone era, with long verandahs, spacious halls furnished with antique furniture, arched doorways, high ceilings and large teak doors, and terraced gardens laid out on different levels around it.
The Fernery is the hotel's main restaurant, serving a fine selection of wines with an international menu of seafood from the southern catch, Italian dishes and Sri Lankan rice and curry.
Galle Fort, the continuous rampart built by the Dutch in the 17th century that still surrounds the old city, is the obvious first visit, together with the Galle Museum and the Maritime Museum. For the beach, Unawatuna stretches for about 4 km and has a well-preserved coral reef for snorkelling.
