Kumu Beach is a contemporary 10-room beachfront hotel and spa at Balapitiya, on Sri Lanka’s southwest “sunset coast”. It stands under coconut palms on a quiet, largely untouched golden beach. Its living and dining spaces are open to the sea breeze, and a wide lawn leads to a 23-metre infinity pool. In the evening, guests climb a seaside boulder to watch the sun go down over the Indian Ocean.
The hotel is about 130 km from Bandaranaike International Airport, around two hours by road. Colombo is about 110 km away and Galle about 35 km (one hour). Ambalangoda railway station is 3.5 km (10 minutes) away. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Kumu Beach.
All ten rooms look over the pool and garden and out to the ocean. The two Kumu Bedrooms (25 sqm) are cosy twin rooms upstairs with garden views and rain showers. The four Oceanview Bedrooms (50 sqm) have king beds, pebble-floored showers and a private veranda or balcony facing the sea. The four Oceanview Suites (75 sqm) add a living area and open straight onto the garden or a sea-view balcony. Every room has air conditioning, a fan, satellite TV, a complimentary minibar, tea and coffee, a safe and Wi-Fi.
The all-day à la carte fusion menu centres on fresh fish and seafood, such as line-caught tuna and tiger prawns, alongside regional curries and plenty of local vegetables. Breakfast is served by the pool and dinner by candlelight under the stars. On hot afternoons the air-conditioned café-style bar is a cool retreat. The kitchen is open from 7 am to 10:30 pm, with packed breakfasts for early starts.
Massages in the spa, hammocks between the palms and sunset swims set the pace here. The lawn and secluded beach also host intimate weddings, milestone birthdays, private parties and retreats.
A boat trip on the wildlife-filled Madu Ganga leaves from five minutes away. So does Ambalangoda, the centre of southern mask-making, where the mask museum is well worth a visit. The hotel also arranges turtle-hatchery visits, a guided southern art tour, rainforest treks, surf lessons and a guided walk through Bawa’s Lunuganga gardens. Bentota is half an hour away, and Galle Fort about an hour.
Kumu Beach is a rare place. Only ten rooms which are superbly comfortable, it has an amazing chef, the best staff and a warm friendly atmosphere. Nothing is too much trouble. This is our second visit and we are already planning a…
I had a great time in Kumu Beach, with particular credit to Pushpritha for helping to make my room clean and my stay enjoyable
Had our last 3 nights in Sri Lanka here for what seems to be the standard format of relaxing after our 11 day tour of the island. The hotel is AMAZING. As said elsewhere, I don’t think I’ve ever been as relaxed. The perfect ending…
