About this experience
This shared-boat whale watching tour collects guests from their hotel in Hikkaduwa and transfers them by road to Mirissa Harbour, where a two-deck passenger vessel sets out into the deep blue water of Sri Lanka's southern ocean. It is one of the more straightforward ways to spend a day looking for some of the largest animals on the planet, with a naturalist on board to help make sense of what you see and to put the different species in context.
The vessel is the 'Nathalia', a blue-and-white two-deck boat with a tarpaulin canopy on the upper deck and orange lifebuoys mounted on the stern rail. Passengers occupy both decks, and the crew wear life jackets during operations. When the boat nears a whale, the skipper reduces speed and engine noise and holds a safe distance — no closer than roughly 300 feet as a standard minimum, with the nearest permitted approach around 100 feet — so that the animals are not disturbed and guests can watch at ease. Species that may be encountered in these waters include blue whales, sperm whales, fin whales, occasional orcas, and various dolphins, though sightings on any given day depend on the animals and the conditions. The calmer seas between December and April make that window the most reliable period to travel.
The day begins with a hotel pickup at 5:00 am. The road journey to Mirissa Harbour takes approximately one hour and twenty minutes, with the boat departing from the harbour at 6:30 am. The whale watching portion of the trip lasts approximately four hours in total, including the passage out to the sighting area and back to the harbour. Once the boat returns, guests are transferred back to their hotel in Hikkaduwa, with the full day's outing running to around nine hours from door to door.
A naturalist sails on every departure to explain the behaviour and biology of the species encountered and to help guests identify what they are seeing from the deck. The tour is run as a shared boat, so guests travel alongside other visitors rather than on a private charter. Children aged five and above are welcome on board.
The price of the tour covers hotel pick-up and drop-off, transport throughout in an air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking chauffeur, the whale watching boat ticket, entrance fees, and one litre of bottled mineral water per person. Food and drinks beyond the water, gratuities, and personal expenses are not part of the package.
