Question 1

What is Garcinia zeylanica called in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is commonly called Goraka in Sinhala. The dried rind of the fruit is a staple souring ingredient in Sri Lankan cooking, particularly in fish curries and the classic southern dish ambul thiyal.

Question 2

What does Goraka taste like?

Accepted Answer

Goraka has a strong, tart, and slightly resinous sourness with a faint smoky note when the smoked variety is used. It is considerably more intense than tamarind and is used in small quantities to acidify dishes.

Question 3

Is Garcinia zeylanica the same as Garcinia cambogia?

Accepted Answer

They are closely related but botanically distinct species. In Sri Lankan markets and recipes, the two names are often used interchangeably. Both contain hydroxycitric acid (HCA) and are used in very similar culinary and Ayurvedic applications.

Question 4

What are the health benefits of Goraka?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Ayurveda credits Goraka with digestive, carminative, and mild antimicrobial properties. Modern research has focused on its hydroxycitric acid content in relation to appetite regulation and fat metabolism, though scientific consensus on clinical outcomes is still developing.

Question 5

How do you cook with dried Goraka?

Accepted Answer

A few dried segments are added directly to a curry pot — typically fish or meat — during simmering. They release their tartness into the dish and are removed before serving. Goraka paste can also be blended into spice mixtures as a convenient alternative.

Question 6

Where can I buy Goraka in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Dried Goraka is sold at local spice stalls, supermarkets, and market halls across Sri Lanka. Colombo's Pettah market and local village markets in the Southern and Sabaragamuwa provinces are reliable sources for whole dried segments and paste.

Question 7

Can I bring dried Goraka back from Sri Lanka as a souvenir?

Accepted Answer

Dried Goraka rinds are generally permitted in personal quantities as a processed food product, but travellers should check the import regulations of their destination country, particularly Australia and New Zealand, which have strict biosecurity rules on plant-derived products.

Question 8

Does Garcinia zeylanica grow anywhere outside Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Garcinia zeylanica is native to Sri Lanka and parts of southern India. Related Garcinia species are found across tropical Asia and West Africa, but the specific zeylanica variety is most closely associated with the wet lowland forests of Sri Lanka.
