Question 1

What is goraka in Sri Lankan cooking?

Accepted Answer

Goraka is the dried rind of the Garcinia fruit, used as a souring agent in Sri Lankan cuisine, most famously in fish ambul thiyal. It adds a sharp, earthy acidity that also acts as a natural preservative. It is sold as whole dried pieces, paste, or powder.

Question 2

Is Garcinia mangostana the same as mangosteen?

Accepted Answer

They are closely related but not identical. Both belong to the genus Garcinia in the family Clusiaceae. The Sri Lankan goraka is most commonly Garcinia cambogia or Garcinia gummi-gutta, while the purple mangosteen eaten as a fresh fruit is technically Garcinia mangostana. The two share genus characteristics but differ in appearance, flavour, and primary use.

Question 3

What does Garcinia or goraka taste like?

Accepted Answer

Dried goraka has a sharp, intensely sour taste with earthy and slightly resinous undertones. It is noticeably more pungent than tamarind and less sweet. A small amount goes a long way in cooking.

Question 4

What are the health benefits of Garcinia cambogia?

Accepted Answer

Traditional Ayurveda uses goraka to support digestion, manage body weight, and reduce inflammation. The fruit rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which has been studied for its potential to inhibit fat synthesis enzymes. Clinical evidence is still developing, so therapeutic use is best discussed with a qualified practitioner.

Question 5

Can I grow a Garcinia goraka plant at home in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The tree adapts well to home gardens in Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones. It prefers well-drained, acidic soil, tropical warmth, and high humidity. Young plants are available from nurseries and specialist suppliers. The tree takes several years to fruit but is otherwise relatively low-maintenance once established.

Question 6

What is the difference between Garcinia capsules and goraka spice?

Accepted Answer

Goraka spice is the whole or ground dried fruit rind used in cooking, containing naturally occurring HCA at culinary concentrations. Garcinia capsules are concentrated dietary supplements standardised for a specific HCA percentage, intended for therapeutic use rather than flavouring. The two products are used in very different contexts and dosages.

Question 7

Where can I buy authentic goraka products from Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Authentic goraka is available in Sri Lankan supermarkets, spice markets, and through specialist online retailers that source directly from Sri Lankan producers. When buying online, look for products that clearly state their origin and manufacturing standards. Lakpura stocks a range of goraka products, from whole dried rinds and paste to Ayurvedic supplements and herbal teas.
