Patini Bungalows is a small, relaxed retreat in Tangalle, a fishing village situated in the centre of Sri Lanka's Southern Coastal belt, roughly 195 km south of Colombo and about two hours by road from the historic Fort of Galle. The property consists of just two beach cottages, positioned between the Indian Ocean on one side and a mangrove lagoon on the other — a setting that is both scenic and quietly removed from the bustle of larger resort towns.

The bungalows are designed with simplicity and comfort in mind. Each cottage comes with four-poster beds fitted with high-quality mattresses, a table and chairs, a fan, a mosquito net, adequate storage for clothes, a modern attached bathroom, and a private veranda that opens toward the beach. Extra beds can be arranged upon request. The atmosphere is unhurried and personal, making Patini a natural choice for travellers seeking a private, unpretentious stay by the sea.

Getting There

The most straightforward route to Tangalle from Colombo follows the Colombo–Galle–Hambantota main motorway. Public buses serve the town, while the nearest railway terminus is at Matara, approximately 35 km before Tangalle. From Matara, onward travel by road is necessary to complete the journey.

Accommodation and Facilities

Both cottages are kept clean and comfortable, and guests are guaranteed to wake to open views of the beach and ocean from their private verandas. The kitchen is available for rent should guests wish to cook for themselves, and basic ingredients are provided. A restaurant is situated immediately next door, with several more options within easy reach. For added convenience, the owners offer internet facilities and webcam access, international and local calling services, laundry and ironing, a small library stocked with French, English and German books, and massage treatments upon request. A taxi service using an air-conditioned van, as well as tuk-tuk hire, is available for day tours and shorter local trips.

Exploring the Surroundings

Tangalle's location in the heart of the Southern Coastal belt makes it an excellent base for exploring the region. The historic Fort of Galle is roughly two hours away, and the Yala Nature and Wild Life Reserve lies at approximately the same distance in the opposite direction. Closer to the bungalows, visitors can explore local temples, the fishing harbour and its morning market, and the natural curiosity of the Blow Hole. A catamaran trip along the mangrove lagoon is a popular outing, as is the opportunity to watch sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Birdwatchers will find the Kalametiya Sanctuary — home to many species of birds — well worth the short journey from Tangalle.
