Mandalay, Galle, Sri Lanka
Mandalay is a luxury villa set on the shore of the tranquil Lake Koggala, situated in the small village of Kathaluwe on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Designed in consultation with Geoffrey Bawa — widely regarded as Sri Lanka's greatest architect — the property is considered the epitome of Sri Lankan style, blending natural surroundings with refined living spaces.
The villa occupies a quiet Buddhist village beside a historic Temple, looking directly across the water toward the mystical, uninhabited island of Madol Doova. It lies approximately 15 minutes from the historic town of Galle, 10 minutes south of the Galle Fort, and 10 minutes north of Welligama, placing guests within easy reach of some of the region's finest restaurants and spas — and only a short stroll from the beach.
Architecture and Layout
Mandalay is arranged as two separate pavilions. One pavilion is dedicated to sleeping, the other to dining and entertaining. Both are oriented to capture spectacular views across the lake toward Madol Doova. A 25-metre swimming pool sits on the verdant lawn that rolls gently down to the water's edge, and a large attap structure beside the lake provides a shaded spot to relax throughout the day.
Accommodation
The property offers five bedrooms in total, each with an attached bathroom and air conditioning. The accommodation pavilion houses three of these bedrooms. The main bedroom occupies the entire top floor and includes a private balcony with lake views, a bath, and an ensuite. Two further bedrooms with ensuites are located on the lower floor, accompanied by both an outside sitting area and an inside sitting area, the latter of which can accommodate two additional beds.
Facilities
Guests have access to a washing machine, telephone, and individual air conditioning in every room. The villa is staffed by a night watchman, a day boy, and a cook. Outdoor amenities include sunbeds, an outdoor lounge suite, and a pontoon from which guests can fish on the lake. A 10-seater dining suite is available in the entertaining pavilion.
Activities and Excursions
A selection of games and books is provided within the villa for quieter moments. Fishing from the lakeside pontoon is a popular pastime on the property itself. For those wishing to explore further, a range of attractions and activities is available within an hour's drive, making Mandalay a comfortable base from which to discover the wider Galle region.
