Jetwing Beach

Negombo, Sri Lanka

Jetwing Beach is a beachfront hotel at Ethukala on the northern side of Negombo, with 75 ocean-view Deluxe Rooms, three Suites and two pools under the coconut palms. Run by Sri Lanka's family-owned Jetwing group, it sits right on the sand yet only a short drive from Bandaranaike International Airport, so it works as well for a full beach holiday as for a comfortable first or last night on the island.

Which room should I book?

Every room faces the Indian Ocean and has its own balcony or terrace, air-conditioning with individual controls, free Wi-Fi, a minibar, satellite television, an electronic safe, tea and coffee making facilities, bathrobes and slippers. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.

  • Deluxe – the hotel's Deluxe Room, of which there are 75. At about 66.5 square metres they are generous for a beach hotel, with a king-size bed, a sitting area, warm timber furnishings and a private balcony or terrace looking out over the gardens to the sea. The bathroom has both a bathtub and a rain shower. Choose a ground-floor terrace or an upper balcony when you book if you have a preference.
  • Suite – one of only three Suites, each about 122.5 square metres, with unobstructed ocean views from a long private balcony, a lounging area and, the signature feature, an open-air courtyard with a jacuzzi, a rain shower and two sun beds. Suite guests have a personal butler and can take dinner privately in their courtyard.

Both categories are designed for two adults. Our rates allow a third adult, or two adults with children, in either category; tell us who is travelling when you book so the hotel can make up the room accordingly.

Where can I eat and drink?

The Sands is the main restaurant, open to the sea breeze on the beachfront, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with an emphasis on seafood and the flavours of Sri Lanka's north-west coast. Black Coral is the oceanside fine-dining restaurant, open for dinner, with lobster, yellowfin tuna, Australian Angus beef and lamb alongside vegetarian and vegan dishes. The Terrace Bar and The Deck look after drinks and lighter meals through the day. Jetwing's signature dining options include a barbecue on the beach and dinner under the stars.

What is there to do at the hotel?

There are two swimming pools, including a long pool that runs between the lawn and a grove of palms towards the beach, with loungers and parasols on the sand beside it. The spa offers Ayurvedic treatments, massages, body scrubs and wraps, and facials. The hotel also arranges outings with local character, including a visit to the Lellama fish market and the Meegama treacle trail, where you see how coconut treacle is made, as well as a farm-to-table pick-and-cook experience. There is a conference hall for meetings and events.

What is nearby?

Negombo Beach runs right in front of the hotel. Negombo is a fishing town with a long Catholic history, often called "Little Rome" for its churches, among them St Mary's Church and St Sebastian's Church. The early-morning fish market is worth getting up for, and the gateway of the old Dutch fort still stands near the lagoon mouth. Boat trips run on Negombo Lagoon and along the Hamilton Canal, and the Muthurajawela wetlands to the south are good for birdlife. Jetwing also suggests a day out to the medieval capital of Dambadeniya, about an hour inland.

Can I arrive by train?

You can, though most guests come by road. Negombo railway station is in the town, on the coastal line north of Colombo, and the hotel features a short train ride to Bolawatta among its local experiences. From the station a three-wheeler or a pre-arranged pick-up will take you up the coast road to Ethukala.

How do I get from the airport to Jetwing Beach?

Negombo is the closest beach resort to Bandaranaike International Airport, so the drive to the hotel is short, which makes it an easy choice after a long-haul flight or before an early departure. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Beach, with the driver waiting as you come through arrivals.

Who is Jetwing Beach best suited to?

It suits couples and families who want a polished beach hotel with big rooms and a choice of restaurants without travelling far from the airport, and travellers who want to start or finish a Sri Lanka tour with a night or two by the sea. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Negombo, or the other Jetwing hotels around the island.

Wonderful home away from home with remarkable staff

I have stayed at this property probably eight or more times at this point during my business trips to Sri Lanka. It's close to the airport, but provides a beach town vibe, and is relatively convenient. This trip exemplified everyt…
