Sophie Mackintosh's debut explores a family of women isolated on an island, bound by a mysterious philosophy that pain and deprivation will shield them from the dangers of the outside world. As the sisters grow older, their mother's teachings begin to unravel, revealing the dark secrets beneath the family's ritualistic existence. Spare, unsettling prose captures the claustrophobic tension of a life governed by fear and control.
