A compact survey of geopolitics, written to gather in one place the kinds of facts that usually sit scattered across separate disciplines. Lt. Col. Nalin Herath draws together material on geography, politics, history, culture, demography and international relations, and holds it all to a single organising idea: spatial politics, or the way territory and position shape the behaviour of states.
The scope runs from the level of the individual state up to the international, which is what gives the book its usefulness as a desk reference. Rather than argue a thesis at length, it sets out facts in condensed form — the sort of groundwork a reader needs before any analysis of current affairs will make much sense. The publisher describes the aim plainly: to help in deciphering the present day.
It is pitched first at students of geopolitics, for whom the combination of material in one volume saves a good deal of hunting, and second at general readers who follow international affairs and want the underlying geographical and demographic context set down clearly. Anyone who reads foreign policy coverage and finds themselves unsure of the terrain being argued over will find the book has been assembled with that gap in mind.
