Accepted Answer

Swertia zeylanica is a small herbaceous plant native to Sri Lanka, belonging to the family Gentianaceae. It is recognised in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalog for its traditional use as a bitter tonic. The species epithet 'zeylanica' reflects its origin in Ceylon, the historical name for the island.

Question 2

What is Swertia zeylanica used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, it is traditionally used to support digestive health, reduce fever, and address liver-related conditions. The plant's bitter compounds are considered the basis of its therapeutic action. It is typically used in decoctions or dried formulations, usually in combination with other medicinal plants.

Question 3

Where does Swertia zeylanica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows in the moist, shaded habitats of Sri Lanka's wet and intermediate zones, particularly in mid- to higher-elevation areas such as the central highlands. Forest margins and grassy clearings with consistent humidity are its preferred settings. Areas around Nuwara Eliya and the Knuckles Range are among the typical habitats.

Question 4

Is Swertia zeylanica endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is native to Sri Lanka, with its scientific name directly referencing its Sri Lankan origin. While the genus Swertia is widespread across tropical and subtropical Asia, Swertia zeylanica is a Sri Lanka-specific member of that group. Detailed endemism data remains subject to ongoing botanical research.

Question 5

Is Swertia zeylanica at risk of being lost from the wild?

Accepted Answer

Like many highland medicinal herbs in Sri Lanka, it faces indirect threats from habitat loss and collection pressure. Comprehensive population data is limited in publicly available literature. Conservation efforts by Sri Lankan botanical and Ayurvedic institutions aim to document and protect such species.

Question 6

Which family does Swertia zeylanica belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to Gentianaceae, a plant family known for producing characteristically bitter compounds including secoiridoid glycosides and xanthones. These compounds are widely associated with digestive, liver-protective, and anti-inflammatory properties across many cultures. The family includes numerous species used in traditional medicine across Asia and Europe.

Question 7

Where in Sri Lanka can I learn about Ayurvedic medicinal plants?
