Question 1

What is Sansevieria cylindrica used for medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Sansevieria cylindrica is cataloged in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant records, where it has been associated with traditional skin treatments and general tonic preparations. Its leaves contain saponins, natural compounds with antimicrobial properties. As with all Ayurvedic plants, use should be guided by a qualified practitioner.

Question 2

Is Sansevieria cylindrica the same as a snake plant?

Accepted Answer

Sansevieria cylindrica is a close relative of the common snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) but differs in having round, cylindrical leaves rather than flat ones. Both belong to what is now classified as the genus Dracaena under current taxonomy. In everyday horticulture, both are often referred to loosely as snake plants.

Question 3

Does Sansevieria cylindrica grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the plant is found across Sri Lanka, particularly in dry-zone and intermediate-zone gardens, home compounds, and rocky scrubland. It is widely cultivated as an ornamental and also appears in the island's Ayurvedic botanical records. Its drought tolerance makes it well suited to Sri Lanka's drier lowland regions.

Question 4

What is the accepted scientific name for Sansevieria cylindrica today?

Accepted Answer

Following recent taxonomic revisions based on molecular research, the accepted name is Dracaena angolensis (syn. Sansevieria cylindrica). The older name Sansevieria cylindrica continues to be widely used in horticulture and traditional medicine literature, including Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic catalogs.

Question 5

How do I care for a Sansevieria cylindrica plant?

Accepted Answer

The plant is low-maintenance and thrives in well-draining soil with infrequent watering — allow the soil to dry completely between waterings to avoid root rot. It grows well in bright indirect light or direct sun, and tolerates low-light conditions better than most succulents. Propagation is straightforward through division of offsets.

Question 6

Is Sansevieria cylindrica poisonous to pets?

Accepted Answer

Sansevieria species, including S. cylindrica, are generally considered mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, with saponins being the likely irritant. Symptoms typically include nausea, drooling, or digestive upset. Keeping the plant out of reach of pets is advisable as a precaution.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains an official catalog of documented medicinal plants used in traditional practice across the island. Lakpura's plant pages provide complementary editorial profiles of species within that catalog, covering botanical details, traditional uses, and ecological context.
