Question 1

What is Paspalum dilatatum used for in medicine?

Accepted Answer

Paspalum dilatatum is documented in Sri Lanka's catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, where it is associated with cooling and anti-inflammatory properties. Traditional practitioners have used whole-plant preparations for conditions related to inflammation and urinary health, though clinical research specific to this species remains limited.

Question 2

Is Paspalum dilatatum native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, Paspalum dilatatum is native to South America and has naturalised across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including Sri Lanka. It is now found in the wet and intermediate zones of the island, particularly in moist, disturbed habitats such as paddy field margins and riverbanks.

Question 3

What does Paspalum dilatatum look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a robust, clump-forming perennial grass with broad, flat leaf blades and finger-like seed head racemes. The stems are stout and slightly flattened at the base, and the plant can grow to around one metre in height. The seed heads bear silky-hairy spikelets that are noticeably larger than those of many related species.

Question 4

Is Paspalum dilatatum the same as kodo millet?

Accepted Answer

No. Kodo millet is Paspalum scrobiculatum, a related but distinct species with a long history as a food grain and medicine in South Asia. Paspalum dilatatum is dallis grass, which is noted primarily for medicinal use in Sri Lanka rather than as a food crop.

Question 5

Can Paspalum dilatatum be toxic?

Accepted Answer

The plant itself is generally non-toxic, but its seed heads are susceptible to infection by Claviceps paspali, an ergot fungus that produces toxic alkaloids. Livestock that graze on infected seed heads can suffer from ergot poisoning. This is an important consideration in any preparation that uses seed material.

Question 6

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant heritage?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka has a rich tradition of ayurvedic medicine supported by government institutions and a diverse pharmacopoeia of native and naturalised plants. Visitors can explore this heritage through ayurvedic garden tours, herbal farm visits, and guided walks in forest reserves across the island's wet zone.

Question 7

How is Paspalum dilatatum prepared as a traditional remedy?

Accepted Answer

Preparations typically involve the whole green plant or freshly expressed juice, often combined with other herbal ingredients. Fresh material gathered from unsprayed environments is preferred by traditional practitioners. Regional formulations vary considerably, reflecting locally adapted practice rather than a single canonical preparation.
