Question 1

What is Panicum repens used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic and traditional South Asian medicine, Panicum repens is primarily used for its cooling and diuretic properties. It is incorporated into decoctions and preparations intended to address conditions linked to excess body heat, urinary complaints, and fever. Its use is documented in Sri Lanka's catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

Where does Panicum repens grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Panicum repens grows across a wide range of habitats in Sri Lanka, from coastal lowlands and paddy field margins to drier inland zones. It is commonly found along riverbanks, irrigation canals, and moist wasteland. Its tolerance for varied soil types, including sandy and waterlogged ground, gives it a broad presence on the island.

Question 3

Is Panicum repens the same as torpedo grass?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Panicum repens is widely known by the common name torpedo grass, a reference to the torpedo-shaped tips of its rhizomes. It is also called creeping panic in some regions. The same characteristics that make it a persistent weed in agriculture — aggressive rhizome spread and environmental adaptability — underpin its availability as a medicinal plant.

Question 4

Is Panicum repens safe to use as a herbal remedy?

Accepted Answer

When used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, Panicum repens is considered safe within traditional frameworks. Self-medication without professional advice is not recommended, as appropriate dosage and preparation depend on an individual's health constitution. Comprehensive clinical safety data in modern medical terms remains limited.

Question 5

What bioactive compounds are found in Panicum repens?

Accepted Answer

Preliminary phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, phenolic acids, and alkaloids in Panicum repens extracts. These compound classes are commonly associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in plant research. However, large-scale clinical trials in humans are limited, and further research is ongoing.

Question 6

Is Panicum repens grown commercially for herbal medicine?

Accepted Answer

Panicum repens is not typically cultivated commercially for medicinal purposes in Sri Lanka. Because of its invasive growth habit, it is usually collected from the wild as required. Its widespread availability across the island means there are no known supply or conservation concerns for this species.

Question 7

How does Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic system document plants like Panicum repens?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda, operating under the Ministry of Health, maintains a catalogue of medicinal plants used in traditional practice. Plants are documented with reference codes, botanical names, and associated therapeutic uses. Panicum repens holds the reference LK94005968 in this national system, reflecting its recognised role in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine.
