Kumbha and Meena Porondam

Kumbha (Aquarius) and Meena (Pisces) sit side by side in the zodiac, and in Sri Lankan marriage matching their results change depending on which partner holds which sign. This page explains what the Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham checks show at the rashi level, and why the two birth stars matter far more in the end.

What do Kumbha and Meena mean in marriage matching?

In Sri Lankan porondam and porutham, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi), worked out in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so your Kumbha or Meena rashi may differ from the sign you usually read.

Three rashi-level items are checked: the rashi count (how many signs apart the two are), the rashi lords (whether the ruling planets are friendly), and vashya (a traditional measure of mutual attraction between signs). Kumbha is ruled by Saturn and Meena by Jupiter. These two planets are mutually neutral, which shapes the rashi lord result in both directions.

How does it look with a Kumbha bride and a Meena groom?

Counting from the bride's Kumbha, the groom's Meena is the 2nd sign. In the Sinhala system, rashi porondam is not obtained, rashyadhipathi (rashi lord) is partly obtained because Saturn and Jupiter are neutral to each other, and vashya is not obtained.

The Tamil system reads this direction a little differently. Rasi porutham is not obtained, but rasi adhipathi porutham is obtained and vasya porutham is obtained. So the two traditions agree on the rashi count but give different weight to the lords and to vashya. Neither result settles the match by itself, because the birth stars still need to be examined.

How does it look with a Meena bride and a Kumbha groom?

Reversing the signs changes the count: from the bride's Meena, the groom's Kumbha is the 12th sign. In the Sinhala system, rashi porondam is partly obtained, rashyadhipathi is partly obtained through the neutral Jupiter and Saturn relationship, and vashya is not obtained.

In the Tamil system, rasi porutham is obtained, rasi adhipathi porutham is obtained, and vasya porutham is not obtained. This direction therefore shows more items obtained at the rashi level than the reverse pairing. It is a useful reminder that the same two signs can give quite different readings depending on who is the bride and who is the groom.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Rashi results are only a starting point. The full match depends on each partner's birth star (nakshatra) and its quarter. For each direction there are 81 star-quarter combinations, and outcomes vary widely among them.

With a Kumbha bride and Meena groom, about 32% of combinations pass Sinhala porondam (excluding the weekday check), while about 51% are rated weak in Tamil porutham. With a Meena bride and Kumbha groom, about 62% pass Sinhala porondam and about 28% are weak in Tamil. In both directions about 4% show a Tamil rajju clash, and none reach 8 of 10 porutham. Your own stars place you in just one of these combinations.
