Kataka and Dhanu Porondam

This page explains how Kataka (Cancer) and Dhanu (Sagittarius) compare in Sri Lankan marriage matching, known as porondam in Sinhala and porutham in Tamil. It sets out the rashi-level results for each direction, with the bride in one sign and the groom in the other. It also shows why the two birth stars, not the signs alone, settle the real match.

What does matching Kataka with Dhanu actually compare?

Here, the rashi means the moon sign (chandra rashi), worked out in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so check the moon sign in each horoscope first.

At the rashi level, three items are compared: the rashi count (how many signs apart the two moon signs sit), the relationship between the two rashi lords, and vashya, the traditional measure of mutual attraction. Counting from the bride's sign to the groom's gives a different number in each direction. Kataka to Dhanu is 6, and Dhanu to Kataka is 8. Because of this, the results differ depending on which sign belongs to the bride.

How does it look when the bride is Kataka and the groom is Dhanu?

Counting from Kataka to Dhanu gives 6. With this count, the rashi item is not obtained in both the Sinhala porondam and the Tamil porutham calculations.

The rashi lords are the Moon for Kataka and Jupiter for Dhanu. Their relationship is friend and neutral, so rashyadhipathi (rasi adhipathi) is obtained in both systems.

Vashya (vasya) is also obtained in both systems. In this direction, two of the three rashi-level items are obtained. The overall picture still depends on the birth stars.

What changes when the bride is Dhanu and the groom is Kataka?

Counting from Dhanu to Kataka gives 8. The two systems treat this count differently. In the Sinhala porondam calculation, the rashi item is partly obtained. In the Tamil porutham calculation, it is not obtained.

The rashi lords are the same pair, Jupiter and the Moon, with a friend and neutral relationship. Rashyadhipathi (rasi adhipathi) is obtained in both systems.

Vashya (vasya) is not obtained in either system in this direction. This shows clearly why it matters which sign belongs to the bride and which to the groom, even when the two signs are the same.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

A rashi holds several birth stars (nakshatra) and their quarters. Pairing every star-quarter in one sign with every star-quarter in the other gives 81 combinations in each direction, and these produce widely varied results.

With a Kataka bride and Dhanu groom, 10% of combinations reach 8 of 10 porutham and 20% come out weak in the Tamil method. With a Dhanu bride and Kataka groom, none reach 8 of 10 and 60% come out weak.

In both directions, 0% show a Tamil rajju clash. 79% pass the Sinhala porondam, not counting the weekday item. Only the two actual birth stars show where a couple falls within this range.
