Question 1

What is Jatropha curcas used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka, Jatropha curcas is catalogued as an ayurvedic medicinal plant. Traditionally, its latex, leaves, and root preparations are used externally for skin conditions, joint pain, and digestive complaints, always under the supervision of a trained ayurvedic practitioner. The plant's seed oil also has applications in biofuel research.

Question 2

Is Jatropha curcas poisonous?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Jatropha curcas is toxic. Its seeds contain curcin and phorbol esters, which can cause serious poisoning if ingested raw. The latex can irritate skin and mucous membranes. In ayurvedic medicine, processed derivatives are used in controlled therapeutic contexts, but the raw plant should never be self-administered.

Question 3

What is the Sinhala name for Jatropha curcas?

Accepted Answer

Jatropha curcas is commonly known in Sinhala as 'Rata endaru' (රට එදරු). It may also be referred to by regional vernacular names in different parts of Sri Lanka. In Tamil, it is sometimes called 'Kattamanakku'.

Question 4

Where does Jatropha curcas grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It is most commonly found in the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, particularly in the North Central, North Western, and Eastern provinces. It grows along roadsides, field boundaries, and in village gardens, thriving in the well-drained, sometimes rocky soils typical of these regions.

Question 5

Can Jatropha curcas be used as biofuel?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Jatropha curcas attracted international interest as a biofuel crop because its seed oil can be refined into biodiesel. Sri Lanka explored cultivation projects along these lines, but large-scale yields proved inconsistent, making commercial viability challenging without significant inputs. Small-scale and agroforestry applications remain of interest.

Question 6

How is Jatropha curcas different from other ayurvedic plants in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Unlike many ayurvedic plants that are valued primarily for their nutritional or aromatic properties, Jatropha curcas is notable for the potency of its toxic compounds, which also underpin its medicinal value in controlled doses. This dual character — harmful if misused, therapeutic if properly prepared — places it in the category of plants requiring specialist knowledge to apply safely.

Question 7

Where can I learn about ayurvedic plants when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Ayurvedic centres and wellness hotels in Kandy, Colombo, and the Southern Province typically maintain herb gardens with guided tours. The National Ayurveda Research Institute in Colombo offers more formal introductions to Sri Lanka's medicinal plant traditions. Village experiences in the dry zone also occasionally include demonstrations of traditional plant knowledge.
