Question 1

What is Impatiens balsamina used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In traditional Ayurvedic practice across South Asia, including Sri Lanka, Impatiens balsamina is used primarily for skin and nail conditions. Fresh leaf poultices are applied to treat fungal nail infections, minor wounds, and inflammatory skin complaints. Internal preparations using seeds and roots have also been recorded for joint pain and certain gynaecological uses, though these require professional guidance.

Question 2

Is Impatiens balsamina found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Impatiens balsamina is both cultivated and found semi-wild across Sri Lanka, particularly in the wet zone and hill country regions. It thrives in moist, partially shaded conditions and self-seeds readily in village gardens and along forest margins. It is formally listed in Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda catalog of medicinal plants.

Question 3

What is the Sinhala name for Impatiens balsamina?

Accepted Answer

The plant is commonly referred to in Sinhala as Nil Balasam or simply Balasam. It is also widely known by the English common names garden balsam and touch-me-not, the latter referring to the explosive seed dispersal mechanism typical of the Impatiens genus.

Question 4

Is Impatiens balsamina safe to use at home?

Accepted Answer

Topical use of fresh leaves is generally considered safe based on a long history of traditional application. Internal preparations, particularly those involving seeds, contain bioactive alkaloids and should only be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Pregnant women are advised to avoid internal use entirely.

Question 5

What active compounds does Impatiens balsamina contain?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone), various flavonoids, and alkaloids. Lawsone is the same compound found in henna and contributes to the plant's known antimicrobial properties. Modern phytochemical studies have examined these compounds in relation to the plant's traditional uses, with broadly supportive findings for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity.

Question 6

Which family does Impatiens balsamina belong to?

Accepted Answer

Question 7

Can I see Ayurvedic medicinal plants during a tour of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer
