Question 1

What is Evolvulus nummularius used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic tradition, Evolvulus nummularius is used as a general tonic and is associated with nervous-system support and cognitive function. Some Ayurvedic texts classify it under the Shankhapushpi group of plants, historically used to support memory and mental clarity. Its use should always be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Is Evolvulus nummularius the same as Shankhapushpi?

Accepted Answer

The name Shankhapushpi is applied in Ayurveda to several different plant species, and Evolvulus alsinoides is the most commonly cited. Evolvulus nummularius is a close relative and is sometimes grouped under the same broad category in certain regional traditions, though it is technically a distinct species with its own botanical profile.

Question 3

Where does Evolvulus nummularius grow?

Accepted Answer

It is a pantropical species found across South and Southeast Asia, including Sri Lanka. On the island, it tends to grow in open, sunny habitats such as roadsides, grasslands, and field margins across the lowland and intermediate climate zones. It is not typically found in dense forest interiors.

Question 4

What family does Evolvulus nummularius belong to?

Accepted Answer

Evolvulus nummularius belongs to the Convolvulaceae family, commonly known as the morning glory family. Unlike many of its climbing relatives, it is a creeping, ground-hugging herb that does not twine around other plants.

Question 5

What does the name Evolvulus nummularius mean?

Accepted Answer

The genus name Evolvulus comes from the Latin word for 'not twining', distinguishing it from climbing members of the Convolvulaceae family. The species epithet nummularius derives from the Latin word for coin, referring to the small, rounded, coin-like shape of the leaves.

Question 6

Is Evolvulus nummularius officially recognised in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic pharmacopeia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is listed in the catalog of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda. This formal recognition reflects its documented history of use by traditional practitioners on the island and its place within the country's indigenous botanical heritage.

Question 7

Are there scientific studies on Evolvulus nummularius?

Accepted Answer

Scientific research on this specific species is limited compared to the closely related Evolvulus alsinoides, which has been more widely studied for neuroprotective and adaptogenic properties. Phytochemical analyses of the genus have identified flavonoids, alkaloids, and triterpenoids, but rigorous clinical studies specifically on E. nummularius remain relatively sparse.
