Question 1

What is Diospyros montana used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic practice, the bark and fruit of Diospyros montana are used in traditional formulations associated with digestive complaints, skin conditions, and fever. Its bark is considered astringent in classical texts. Anyone seeking therapeutic use should consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 2

Where does Diospyros montana grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows primarily in the dry and intermediate zone forests of Sri Lanka's north and north-central regions, often on well-drained, rocky or laterite soils. It is adapted to seasonal drought and can be found in protected areas such as Wilpattu National Park.

Question 3

Is Diospyros montana the same as ebony?

Accepted Answer

No, though both belong to the family Ebenaceae. Ceylon ebony is Diospyros ebenum, a separate species historically prized for its dense black heartwood. Diospyros montana is a smaller tree valued primarily for its medicinal properties rather than its timber.

Question 4

Is Diospyros montana endangered?

Accepted Answer

Diospyros montana is not currently listed as globally threatened, but dry-zone deforestation in Sri Lanka does put localised populations at risk. Conservation of the dry mixed evergreen forests where it grows is important for the long-term survival of the species.

Question 5

What does Diospyros montana look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree with dark, furrowed bark typical of the Ebenaceae family. It bears small yellowish-white flowers and round, berry-like fruits that ripen to orange or red. The wood is hard and dense but not commercially exploited at scale.

Question 6

Can I see Diospyros montana while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, visitors to Sri Lanka's dry-zone forests and national parks in the north and north-central provinces may encounter this tree in its natural habitat. Guided botanical walks in protected areas offer the best opportunity to identify it alongside a naturalist.

Question 7

What other Sri Lankan trees are similar to Diospyros montana in Ayurvedic use?

Accepted Answer

Several native Sri Lankan trees share a documented role in Ayurvedic practice, including Acacia chundra and Pongamia pinnata. All appear in the country's official catalogue of medicinal plants maintained by the Department of Ayurveda.
