Question 1

What is Crotalaria juncea used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic practice, Crotalaria juncea is referenced for its cooling properties, with its leaves used externally for skin conditions and its seeds cited for anti-parasitic applications. It appears in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants. Use under qualified Ayurvedic guidance is strongly recommended due to the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in some plant parts.

Question 2

Is Crotalaria juncea the same as sunn hemp?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Crotalaria juncea is commonly known as sunn hemp. The name refers to its fibre-bearing stems, which have historically been processed for rope and coarse fabric. It is distinct from Cannabis sativa (hemp) and is a member of the legume family Fabaceae.

Question 3

Is Crotalaria juncea toxic or dangerous?

Accepted Answer

Certain parts of the plant, particularly the seeds, contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can be toxic to the liver if consumed in large or improperly prepared doses. This does not negate its legitimate medicinal use when prescribed and overseen by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. It should not be self-administered without professional advice.

Question 4

Where does Crotalaria juncea grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is found mainly in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climate zones, particularly in the North Central Province and parts of the Uva Province. It tolerates well-drained soils and moderate drought. Farmers often grow it as a green manure crop between paddy or vegetable cultivation cycles.

Question 5

What are the agricultural benefits of growing Crotalaria juncea?

Accepted Answer

Crotalaria juncea fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, enriching the soil and reducing dependence on synthetic fertilisers. It also suppresses root-knot nematodes, controls soil erosion, and produces high quantities of organic biomass when used as green manure. These qualities make it valuable in sustainable and traditional farming systems.

Question 6

Can tourists learn about Ayurvedic plants like Crotalaria juncea in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens near Kandy maintains extensive medicinal plant collections, and many Ayurvedic spice gardens around the island offer guided tours. Wellness-focused hotels and resorts also run structured programmes introducing guests to Sri Lanka's classical herbal traditions.

Question 7

How is Crotalaria juncea related to Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka maintains a formal national registry of Ayurvedic medicinal plants, which forms the reference base for practitioners of indigenous medicine and for the production of classical herbal formulations. Crotalaria juncea is formally listed within this catalogue, affirming its recognised role in the country's traditional medical system.
