Question 1

What is Corchorus capsularis used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Corchorus capsularis is used in South Asian traditional medicine, including Sri Lankan Ayurveda, for purposes such as aiding digestion, managing mild fevers, reducing inflammation, and supporting kidney health. The leaves are also consumed as a nutritive vegetable. In formal ayurvedic practice, it is typically incorporated into compound formulations prepared by trained physicians.

Question 2

Is Corchorus capsularis found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Corchorus capsularis grows in Sri Lanka both in cultivation and in semi-wild settings, particularly in the lowland wet zone and transitional climate areas. It is recognised as part of Sri Lanka's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 3

What parts of the Corchorus capsularis plant are used medicinally?

Accepted Answer

The leaves, seeds, and roots of Corchorus capsularis are the parts most commonly referenced in traditional medicine. Leaves are sometimes consumed as a vegetable or prepared as a decoction, while seeds and roots appear in various herbal formulations. The seeds should be used cautiously, as they contain bioactive compounds that may be harmful in large quantities.

Question 4

Is Corchorus capsularis the same as jute?

Accepted Answer

Corchorus capsularis is one of two main species cultivated commercially for jute fibre, the other being Corchorus olitorius. While the plant is indeed a jute crop, its medicinal properties are distinct from its fibre applications, and in the context of Sri Lankan Ayurveda it is valued for its leaves and seeds rather than its stem fibre.

Question 5

What does Corchorus capsularis look like?

Accepted Answer

It is an annual herbaceous plant that can grow between one and four metres tall with an erect, branching stem. It produces small five-petalled yellow flowers and round seed capsules that distinguish it from the related species Corchorus olitorius, which has elongated capsules.

Question 6

Are there any safety concerns with using Corchorus capsularis?

Accepted Answer

The seeds of Corchorus capsularis contain bioactive compounds that can be harmful in large doses, so unsupervised consumption is discouraged. Anyone considering using this plant as a remedy should consult a qualified ayurvedic physician. Pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and people on prescription medications should take particular care.

Question 7
