Question 1

What family does Connarus championii belong to?

Accepted Answer

Connarus championii belongs to the plant family Connaraceae, a group of tropical woody climbers, shrubs, and small trees found across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Within Sri Lanka, the species is considered endemic or near-endemic to the island's forest zones.

Question 2

What is Connarus championii used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

The plant is catalogued in Sri Lanka's official list of Ayurvedic medicinal plants, indicating its recognised role in the island's indigenous medical tradition. Related species in the Connarus genus have been associated with treatments for inflammation, skin conditions, and fever in various parts of tropical Asia, though specific applications should be confirmed with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.

Question 3

Where can Connarus championii be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is generally associated with humid lowland and mid-elevation forests in Sri Lanka's wet zone, particularly in the south-western interior of the island. Protected forest areas in this region provide the undisturbed habitat that endemic woody climbers typically require.

Question 4

Is Connarus championii an endangered plant?

Accepted Answer

As an endemic species with a naturally limited range, Connarus championii is inherently vulnerable to habitat loss and forest degradation. Its specific IUCN conservation status should be verified through current assessments, but endemic wet-zone forest plants in Sri Lanka broadly face pressure from deforestation and agricultural expansion.

Question 5

How does Sri Lanka document its Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka maintains an official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants compiled through ethnobotanical research and the documentation of traditional practice. Institutions such as the Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurvedic Research Institute contribute to this work, cross-referencing classical texts with modern botanical classification.

Question 6

What other endemic medicinal plants are native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's flora includes hundreds of endemic and indigenous medicinal plants, ranging from well-known species such as Pongamia pinnata and Acacia chundra to lesser-documented plants like Connarus championii. The island's status as a biodiversity hotspot means its forests harbour a particularly high concentration of unique plant species.

Question 7

Are Connarus species found outside Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the genus Connarus is broadly distributed across tropical regions worldwide, including parts of Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Central and South America. However, individual species within the genus tend to have more restricted ranges, and Connarus championii is specific to Sri Lanka.
