Question 1

What is Chrysopogon aciculatus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic tradition, Chrysopogon aciculatus is associated with cooling and diuretic properties. The roots are cited in classical texts for use in preparations related to fever, urinary complaints, and certain skin conditions. It typically appears as a component in compound formulations rather than as a single-herb remedy.

Question 2

Where does Chrysopogon aciculatus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The grass is widely distributed across Sri Lanka's lowland and mid-country zones, particularly in the dry and intermediate climatic regions. It colonises roadsides, forest margins, field boundaries, and disturbed open ground throughout the island's warmer areas.

Question 3

Is Chrysopogon aciculatus a weed or a medicinal plant?

Accepted Answer

It is both, depending on context. In managed pastures and lawns, its sharp barbed spikelets and spreading habit make it an unwanted species. In traditional Ayurvedic practice, however, it is a catalogued medicinal plant with documented therapeutic applications, particularly using root preparations.

Question 4

What does the name Chrysopogon aciculatus mean?

Accepted Answer

Chrysopogon comes from the Greek for 'golden beard', referring to the golden bristles on the plant's flower heads. Aciculatus is Latin for 'needle-like', describing the sharp awns on the spikelets that readily attach to fur and clothing.

Question 5

Is this plant the same as vetiver grass?

Accepted Answer

No, though they are related. Both Chrysopogon aciculatus and vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides) belong to the same genus. Vetiver is far more commercially prominent, cultivated extensively for its aromatic roots used in perfumery and soil stabilisation. Chrysopogon aciculatus is a distinct species with different growth habits and uses.

Question 6

Can I find Chrysopogon aciculatus during a visit to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is a common grassland species and relatively easy to spot in open rural areas, especially along roadsides, trail margins, and the edges of agricultural land in the dry and intermediate zones. Its barbed spikelets make it easier to identify — and to accidentally collect on your clothing during a walk.

Question 7

How is Chrysopogon aciculatus documented in Sri Lanka's official Ayurvedic records?

Accepted Answer

The plant is listed in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of Ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. Each entry is assigned a reference code; Chrysopogon aciculatus carries the designation LK94006005 within this classification system. This cataloguing supports both clinical practice and ongoing botanical research.
