Question 1

What is Carallia calycina used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, the bark of Carallia calycina has been used in preparations for skin conditions, wound healing, and inflammation. Its astringent properties, likely linked to tannin content, are also associated with oral health applications. These uses are rooted in traditional practice rather than extensively validated clinical research.

Question 2

What family does Carallia calycina belong to?

Accepted Answer

Carallia calycina belongs to the family Rhizophoraceae, which is best known for comprising mangrove species. Unlike its coastal relatives, Carallia calycina grows in humid inland and riverine forests across tropical Asia, including Sri Lanka's lowland wet zone.

Question 3

Where can Carallia calycina be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is found primarily in Sri Lanka's lowland wet-zone forests and along riverine corridors. Protected areas in the southwestern part of the island, including the buffer zones around Sinharaja, represent likely habitats. It can occasionally be seen in well-catalogued botanical gardens such as Peradeniya.

Question 4

Is Carallia calycina an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Carallia calycina is not currently categorised among Sri Lanka's critically threatened species, but it depends on lowland wet-zone forests that have experienced significant habitat loss. Continued forest protection is important for maintaining viable populations of this and many other specialist tree species.

Question 5

How many medicinal plants are in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda recognises several hundred plant species as part of the country's official Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. The island's biodiversity across wet, dry, and montane zones supports this wide range of medicinal flora, making it one of the richest repositories of plant-based traditional medicine in South Asia.

Question 6

Can tourists learn about Ayurvedic plants while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya near Kandy has a dedicated medicinal plant section with labelled specimens. Ayurvedic retreats, particularly in the hill country and southwest coastal belt, offer consultations and guided plant walks. Village herbalist experiences in rural communities also provide an authentic introduction to traditional botanical knowledge.

Question 7

What does Carallia calycina look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a medium to large evergreen tree with glossy, simple leaves that have finely toothed margins. The bark is rough and fissured, and the tree produces small clustered flowers and berry-like fruits. Its overall appearance is typical of a dense, canopy-forming forest tree rather than an ornamental or cultivated species.
