Question 1

What is Aristida setacea?

Accepted Answer

Aristida setacea is a tropical grass in the family Poaceae, sometimes called a three-awn grass because of the triple-awned tips on its grain. It is native to tropical Asia, Africa, and Australia, and in Sri Lanka it is recorded as part of the country's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants.

Question 2

What are the medicinal uses of Aristida setacea in ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

Traditional ayurvedic practitioners in South Asia have used related grasses to address urinary disorders, fever, and inflammation, and Aristida setacea is formally listed in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic plant catalogue. Specific preparations vary by region and practitioner. Clinical research on this species remains limited, so its uses are best understood within the context of traditional knowledge.

Question 3

Where does Aristida setacea grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant favours dry, open habitats with thin or degraded soils — roadsides, fallow land, and dry scrub margins. It is most commonly associated with the dry and intermediate zones of Sri Lanka, particularly in the North Central Province.

Question 4

Is Aristida setacea an endangered plant in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Aristida setacea is not considered threatened. As a pioneer grassland species adapted to disturbed ground, it is relatively resilient to habitat changes that adversely affect specialist forest plants. It is not listed among Sri Lanka's rare or endemic species.

Question 5

How many plants are in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's formal ayurvedic plant catalogue encompasses several hundred species, ranging from large trees and shrubs to herbs, climbers, and grasses. The list is maintained and periodically updated by the government's Department of Ayurveda in collaboration with research institutions.

Question 6

Can tourists learn about ayurvedic medicinal plants while visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka has dedicated ayurvedic gardens, wellness resorts, and guided botanical experiences that introduce visitors to traditional medicinal plants in their natural or cultivated settings. Many ayurvedic resort programmes include plant identification walks led by qualified practitioners or botanists.

Question 7

What is the Sinhala name for Aristida setacea?

Accepted Answer

Common vernacular names for Aristida species in Sri Lanka vary by region and are often shared across related grass species. If you are consulting a traditional practitioner, referring to the plant by its scientific name — Aristida setacea — is the most reliable way to ensure correct identification.
