About this experience
This is a full-day tour that takes you from Ahangama, on Sri Lanka's southern coast, deep into the dry zone of the island's southeast to spend an afternoon inside Yala National Park — Sri Lanka's second-largest national park and the country's most visited wildlife reserve. The park sits where the Southern and Uva provinces meet the Indian Ocean, covering nearly a thousand square kilometres of dry forest, open scrubland, rocky outcrops, lagoons, and grassland. It is one of the few places in the world where Sri Lankan leopards can be found at notable density, and it is also home to Asian elephants, wild water buffalo, sloth bear, sambar deer, and a recorded 215 bird species across terrain that changes markedly as the dry season draws animals towards shrinking waterholes.
The day begins with a hotel pick-up in Ahangama at 10:30 am. Your chauffeur guide, who is English-speaking, drives you to the park in an air-conditioned vehicle, arriving at the gate by 2:00 pm — the start of the afternoon safari session. There you board an open-top safari jeep with a canvas overhead canopy and a certified licensed driver-guide, and set off along the red laterite tracks into the park. The three-hour jeep safari gives time to cover a reasonable stretch of terrain: waterholes where elephants wade and wallow, stretches of thorn scrub where leopards rest in daylight hours, and more open ground where deer and birds are easier to watch. All visitors are required by park regulations to remain inside the jeep at all times during the safari, and jeep access to the park interior is the only permitted way to explore it.
Yala's wildlife has been protected since 1900, when the area was first designated a sanctuary, and formally gazetted as a national park on 1 March 1938. The park is managed by Sri Lanka's Department of Wildlife Conservation and, as of 2024, all safari jeep drivers operating inside the park are required to hold a certification and identification card issued by the Department. The park also contains the ancient monastic site of Sithulpawwa, a reminder that this landscape has been inhabited and revered for roughly two thousand years.
After the safari the return journey to Ahangama begins, with arrival back at your hotel by 9:00 pm. The tour price covers hotel pick-up and drop-off, all road transport in the air-conditioned vehicle, the services of the chauffeur guide, the safari jeep with its certified driver-guide, one litre of bottled water per person, and all taxes and service charges. Park entrance tickets are included when the 'Jeep with Tickets' option is selected at booking; if you choose the 'Jeep without Tickets' option, entrance tickets are not included and would need to be arranged separately. Food, drinks beyond the provided water, and gratuities are not part of the package.
Yala's blocks close seasonally for an annual rest period each September and October, so it is worth confirming availability if your travel falls near those months. The best wildlife activity tends to coincide with the dry season between February and July, when animals concentrate around remaining water sources, though the park receives visitors throughout the open season. Children aged five and above are welcome on the tour, and the open-top jeep format suits anyone with a reasonable interest in wildlife and the patience that a safari rewards.
