A collection of short stories by Sarath Wijesooriya, written and published entirely in Sinhala. Readers without Sinhala will not be able to use it; there is no English text here.
The stories work in the realist mode, and the publisher describes them as experiments in the relationship between experience and imagination — the idea being that the unfeigned quality of lived experience and the work of imagination both contribute to what makes a piece of writing meaningful and what makes it enjoyable to read. The stories are written out of that understanding, and are intended to stir the reader's own imaginative sense.
Two further claims run through the collection as the publisher sets it out. First, that a literary work is a mirror of the society and the moment in which it appeared. Second, that a literary work is not confined to that moment: whatever period a piece of writing comes from, what matters to the reader is the enjoyment of life to be drawn from it. The stories in Wimukthiya are offered as evidence of both.
