About this experience
This full-day tour takes you from Colombo to Kitulgala, a small riverside town in Sri Lanka's wet-zone foothills where the Kelani River carves through dense tropical rainforest on its way down from the central highlands. The centrepiece is a white water rafting session on a 5 km stretch of the Kelani that contains five major rapids and four minor ones, rated Class II to III at normal water levels — turbulent enough to be genuinely exciting, manageable enough for first-timers and older children.
Pick-up is from your Colombo hotel in a private air-conditioned vehicle. The journey east takes roughly three hours, arriving at the adventure base by mid-morning. Before anyone steps into a raft, an English-speaking instructor runs a thorough safety briefing covering paddling technique, river commands, and what to do if you enter the water. Life jackets and helmets are provided at the base — as the photographs of previous sessions show, participants are fully kitted out before reaching the water. The session runs through the morning, and the river corridor itself — rocky banks, boulders mid-stream, fast water funnelling between jungle-covered hillsides — makes for a striking stretch of Sri Lanka that most visitors never reach.
The adventure base has a restaurant where Sri Lankan food is available for lunch at your own expense, and there are facilities to wash and change before the return journey. The drive back to Colombo departs in the early afternoon, with arrival at your hotel in the early evening. The total time away from Colombo is approximately six and a half hours.
Kitulgala carries some history alongside its rapids. The town gained international recognition as the location where David Lean filmed the Oscar-winning 1957 picture 'The Bridge on the River Kwai', shot on the Kelani before the sets were demolished and the jungle reclaimed the banks. It is also a base for other adventure activities — canyoning, abseiling, kayaking — should you want to explore that side of it independently.
A few practical points worth knowing before you book. The minimum age for participation is 11 years. Water sports attire is recommended; bring a change of clothes and leave valuables secured at the base before getting on the water. Food, personal expenses and gratuities are not covered by the tour.
