Mary Lennox is a sour, solitary child when she arrives at her uncle's house on the Yorkshire moors, orphaned in India and sent to relatives she has never met. The house is large and largely shut up. Somewhere in its grounds lies a walled garden, locked and left to itself since her aunt died there. With a robin, a gardener's boy who seems to understand animals, and in time her cousin Colin — kept indoors and convinced he will not live — Mary works the garden back into life, and the children alter as it does.
Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote a story in which weather, soil and the plain business of digging carry as much weight as plot, and the Yorkshire dialect of the servants sits alongside the clipped speech of the household. It has stayed in print and in reading lists ever since.
