About this experience

This private day tour from Kandy takes in two of Sri Lanka's most significant ancient sites in a single journey: Sigiriya Rock Fortress and the Golden Temple of Dambulla, both of which hold UNESCO World Heritage status. An English-speaking chauffeur guide collects you from your hotel in Kandy and returns you there at the end of the day, with transport throughout in an air-conditioned vehicle and entrance tickets to both sites included.

Sigiriya — known in Sinhalese as Lion Rock — is a granite outcrop rising roughly 180 metres above the surrounding jungle plains. King Kassapa I built his palace complex here in the late fifth century AD, and what remains is a remarkably complete record of ancient Sri Lankan ingenuity: brick-walled water gardens along the approach pathway, rock paintings of celestial figures on the sheer cliff face, and a monumental gateway framed by the brick-and-plaster paws of a lion that gives the site its name. The ascent leads through these paws and up steep metal-railed staircases to the summit ruins, where the scale of the original palace complex — cisterns still functional after fifteen centuries — becomes clear. UNESCO inscribed Sigiriya in 1982, recognising its exceptional value in ancient architecture, hydraulic technology, town planning, and cultural landscape.

From Sigiriya the tour continues to Dambulla, a short drive across the plains. The Golden Temple of Dambulla — formally the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple — is Sri Lanka's largest and best-preserved cave temple complex, established as a monastic site from the third century BC and in continuous religious use ever since. Five cave sanctuaries are carved beneath a single vast granite overhang, their interiors lined with Buddhist murals and statues accumulated over more than two millennia. UNESCO, which inscribed the site in 1991, records that the complex contains 157 statues and mural paintings covering a substantial area across all five caves. The murals visible today are largely the product of an eighteenth-century restoration undertaken by the Kingdom of Kandy, which repainted the caves in the style of that period. The complex remains a functioning Buddhist monastery and pilgrimage site.

At the lower entrance to the Dambulla complex stands the Golden Temple building, its facade formed by a sculpted guardian-demon portal and its roofline crowned by a large gilded seated Buddha statue. This modern entrance structure houses a Buddhist museum and marks the start of the approach to the ancient cave shrines above. Because the cave temple is an active place of worship, visitors are asked to remove footwear before entering and to ensure that shoulders and knees are covered — modest, comfortable clothing is therefore as important as the sturdy walking shoes recommended for both sites.

The tour is arranged as a private experience, with hotel pickup and drop-off from Kandy and bottled water provided per person. Children from the age of five are welcome. Food and drinks beyond the water provided are not included, so it is worth eating before departure or carrying snacks for the day. Gratuities for the guide are entirely at your discretion.
